In looking at whether to place your master suite downstairs or upstairs in a multi-story home, here are some things to consider:
Downstairs
Convenient for the owners
No stairs from the living area
Provides isolation from children and others living with you
Upstairs
Can reduce the footprint of your home
Smaller footprint means more yard space
Reduce construction costs
Convenient to children’s bedrooms
Some homeowners opt for two master suites, one down and one up. This provides closeness to the children when they’re small and isolation later on.
In addition to, or instead of the master suite, you may want to consider placing a secondary bedroom downstairs for aging parents that may visit.
For isolation in a single-story home we can design a layout that places the master suite on the opposite end or side of the home from the secondary bedrooms.
